It is important to note that there are many different trains are at different levels of moderness which each have different stops along the Vietnam Railways network, added to this each train has several different cabin or class types, so unless you have a travel agent that knows the Vietnam railway system very well, leave your booking until you arrive to get advice from the locals. Having said that if you are travelling during Vietnam holiday seasons such as Tet (Vietnamese New Year) or other peak periods it is wise to book in advance as soon as you arrive in Ho Chi Min City especially if you want a soft sleeper or VIP room/cabin.

District 3 is not the original location of the Saigon Train station it was originally located near Ben Thanh Market in District 1 it was moved to its present location in the early 1980’s, as the progress of Ho Chi Minh City moves forward there already talk of moving yet again out to Binh Trieu.
Getting to Ga Sài Gòn to save some money you can take SaigonBus from District 1 just get yourself on to Bus 7 from Ben Thanh Bus stop (across the road from Ben Thanh Market) the trip will only cost VND 4,000
